Blank tiles in Windows 8 - especially apps from the app store. Just color tiles without titles, still run fine.
If you are using FastPictureViewer and the codec pack, uninstall it and restart the machine. May have to uninstall / re-install the apps again.
It took me a lot of investigation to find this out, hope this helps someone using the FastPictureViewer.
